ActiveRecord update returns HTTP 503

I am trying to update my account details in code, via ActiveRecord:

Account.update(params[:account])

The params come in as a JSON hash from a Web API. When I try to make this call I get back an HTTP 503 Server Unavailable message.

I have a complete, working, sample program (see below), but cannot see why it's not working for me.
