Fraudsters have stolen millions of credit and debit card numbers, making bogus $100 Amazon purchases at customers' expense, starting a week ago.

Amazon users in the US, UK, Germany, Brazil and India are being targeted in a fraud campaign that appears to be a combination of large-scale phishing and card skimmers.

Despite the attacks not hitting Amazon's own systems, the company has disabled the credit card payment method in all but 10 countries to prevent customer fraud.

In a statement, Amazon said:

"The credit card transaction on Amazon.com was not compromised, and the charge was successfully reversed. We are working closely with law enforcement to help identify and catch those responsible."

The attackers leveraged the stolen credit card data to empty the accounts of Amazon's customers, the company explained.

The fraudsters cashed out, spending the stolen funds on items such as text books, electronics, iPads and Xbox One games.

"They will soon be out of money, and so they will steal the credit card number of a different customer," Amazon explained. "These skimmers can store a victim's card number on a connected device. These devices can be used to perform more card skimming in the future.

"We want to reassure customers that, despite the recent fraudulent activity, there are no signs that customer credit card data was compromised or misused, and we are continuing to update fraud detection systems and take appropriate steps to protect customers."

The news follows earlier malicious emails that disabled PayPal accounts and a massive UK card skimming exercise that took place earlier this year.

Card skimming is a technique that allows crooks to copy card data from legitimate cards through the equipment they use to fake cards, then use the stolen numbers to make fraudulent purchases.

So far, Amazon says it hasn't been affected by the fraud. ®Q:
