To promote the study of mental health in the context of disability and to improve the lives of people with disabilities, we seek support for a three-day conference entitled "Hand in Hand: Science, Medicine and the Rehabilitation of People with Mental Illness". This conference will be a critical event in the revitalization of psychiatric rehabilitation as a distinct specialty. The American Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (APRA) initiated the ACRSS in 1989. Today the ACRSS is a biannual meeting attended by over 400 delegates from around the world. The ACRSS provides a unique opportunity for psychiatrists and other scientists working in the field of rehabilitation medicine to discuss the latest research and the challenges and controversies in rehabilitation psychiatry and to develop strategies to improve the quality of life for people with psychiatric disability. In many countries, mentally ill people are often excluded from the general medical profession, and the same holds for most rehabilitation providers. The APRA has tried to promote an integrated approach to treatment in the APRA Position Paper "Hand in Hand" published in 1995. A revision was published in 2003. This position statement remains central to the APRA and is intended to support the ongoing research and clinical work of those working in the field of rehabilitation medicine and psychiatry. By providing a forum for the exchange of ideas, this conference may help the APRA to further promote its position statement and to guide future research and program development in the field of rehabilitation psychiatry.
