.Carbohydrate-rich foods, such as whole-grain bread and oats, are associated with a reduced incidence of colorectal cancer, according to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition.

In a cohort study of nearly 33,000 men and women, researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that those who were the most likely to have colorectal cancer had high intakes of refined bread and sugar. The link between refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, and cancer was also found to be independent of dietary fiber.

"Our research shows that carbohydrate intake is associated with colorectal cancer risk independently of dietary fiber intake," says study author Tamara J. Ward, PhD, MPH, a nutrition researcher at Harvard Chan and the T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

"Our findings were similar to previous studies that demonstrated a significant association between higher intakes of refined grains and colorectal cancer risk."

In their study, Ward and colleagues used the Nurses' Health Study, which started in 1976 and now includes more than 160,000 women followed for over 2 decades. Researchers linked the data on diet and cancer in these women with dietary and cancer information for nearly 33,000 men who have been followed by a team of researchers for over 20 years.

The researchers found that refined carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, and sugar were associated with a higher risk of colorectal cancer. Refined carbohydrates contained less fiber than whole grains and, unlike whole grains, are generally not needed for good health. In the past, these refined carbohydrates have been associated with obesity and metabolic
