The 2012 sequel takes on a very different direction. While the first film was a typical psychological study of a Jungian archetype, this sequel is more of a mindless Hercules action movie that has no philosophical content and is riddled with a preponderance of anachronistic, unrealistic story elements. Hercules' quest for new adventures goes in a very strange direction: literally, following a giant comet which takes him to the very sun to defeat Cronos, the god of time. Without any regard to or understanding of Jungian archetypes, the film plays the role of a child-friendly television series and inexplicably portrays Hercules as a super-hero. The reason for the element of time is merely a surface-level rationale. Instead, the film seems to have the objective of combining all of the world's myths and legends into one story. While that is not exactly a bad thing, the film never manages to overcome its own shortcomings and/or inherent weaknesses. If the filmmakers did not need to rely on a heterosexual romantic subplot, the film could have been improved quite a bit. The rest of the film is a contrived and tedious mess with the romance tripe at the center of it.
