stalker wears a collar, a look obviously borrowed from tarkovskys own bearded, aloof friend, the physicist ilia vitebski, who also wears one. the two men were friends from tarks original acting troupe. stalker resembles little the warrior-creator so much as he does tarks visual counterpart, the singer-actor lev dodoskoy, who also wears a collar.

but unlike filmmakers like the german frederick wischnewski and perhaps even the romanian lucidor moldoveanu, whose flourishing careers were cut short by the advent of the new soviet man, tarkovsky was a fugitive from this society, never succumbing to its temptations and corrupting influences. arguably, the freedom and wealth of the west attracted him, and it was only the loss of his wife that allowed him to return to his country of birth.

perhaps the great arc of his career might have taken a different turn had he not been able to produce stalker, perhaps a memorable, lavish film. tarkovsky was a good man with a purposeful artistic sensibility, one capable of harnessing the indescribable energy of the russian landscape to shape a serious, challenging work of art. among his most cherished possessions at his death in march, 2010, were notes for the stalker  screenplay, scribbled over and cut up like forgotten ephemera, that he had been too shy to show his wife.

the apocryphal loss of final tarkovsky footage has ensured that we will never see the stalker in its entirety, but it has afforded us, for the first time, a glimpse inside tarkovskys head. his notebooks, his notes, his drawings, provide us with intimate glimpses of the way a filmmaker works and the mind behind it. in one sequence, supposedly lost forever, a sheet of paper is discovered on the floor of tarkovskys cabin. there are five lines of film seemingly illegible to the naked eye and containing two icons of the film: a long-haired dog, with a birdlike face, sitting in a tree; and a small figure in a workman's hat, the hat apparently having been attached to the dog by mistake. the dog was meant to be the stalker himself, and the man was obviously the writer. but, as in many tarkovsky films, we never see the film itself. we instead are provided with tantalizing, partial glimpses of a completed project and the thought process that went into its creation, along with insight into tarkovskys private, spiritual life. were that film ever recovered, we may even be presented with a complete work of art. 81555fee3f
